Ah Ambient.. I worked on this one for 3 weeks full time on a 386SX 25Mhz that White Tiger lended me while I was at the university in Namur. My goal was to complete our first ever 64k intro and enter it into The Meeting'95's compo. Developping it took hard work since it has our first texture mapped vectors, realtime fractal, realtime circles and the challenge of fitting all in 64k.
I had an almost completed product when leaving for the party place, for the first time I had this feeling we had a chance to finally won a compo. cSurfer supplied me some cool gfx, we really didn't have a musician anymore at the time so I used a tune (with credit) from essence. At the party, I managed to finish everything except for a small problem.. it was over 64k... so I reluctantly removed Soundblaster support from Midas as Gravis Ultrasound (GUS) replay code was much smaller. I had no GUS at that time, there were still rare and expensive. So I completed the coding work without hearing the music.
During the compo, I seated while grinning a bit, I had a look on other intro compo competitors and I had really a chance, not that the code was outstanding but I had managed to cram quite of few effects in there with a ok design. Finally it was the turn of Ambient to be shown, the square wave of the chiptune resonated beautifully, everything looked great... here was my 15mins of fame... until a weird texture filled with random data showed up on one of the texture mapped cube's face .. "uhoh" ... and ... the music replay code crashed and started looping on a high pitched note... I was mortified... I obviously either butchered Midas too much or there was a bug in the texture mapping that blasted the midas code with garbage. The organizer had the good idea to turn the volume down before everybody went deaf and the intro continued without further crash ... in silence.
I still managed to won the intro compo but it seemed we had a curse about showing our prods on big screen (see Genesia video) so, I wanted revenge...
