Program Notes:

In recognition of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) last year, I composed this brief violin duet piece. It utilizes an alphabetical grid, which translates letters into musical notation. This particular approach stemmed from my curiosity with setting the word “DISABILITY” to music. As my work progressed, I included the idea of experimenting with other relevant words and abbreviations (eg, “RIGHTS,” “FREEDOM,” “EQUALTY,” “ADA,” “MIGHT,”etc) and removing the prefix “DIS-.” As a composer with Cerebral Palsy, I perceive From Struggle to Acceptance as a musical reflection of the necessity and efforts of the Americans with Disabilities Act. However, I am also mindful that more work needs to be done. For this reasons, my piece ends unresolved, spelling the phrase “MORE TO DO.”
