Danny Lee is a North Korean Refugee who escaped North Korea when he was seventeen years old. With a weakening economy and the mid-1990s famine crisis, starvation was rampant in North Korea. Due to governmental neglect, Danny's family lacked the basic necessities of life and he often saw people dying on the street. Millions of North Korea perished during this time. After watching his own grandmother starved to death, he risked his life and fled to China. He was fully aware that, if caught by the Chinese and North Korean governments, he risked extreme punishments including torture and detainment in political prison camps. While living in hiding, Danny was connected with Liberty in North Korea (LiNK), a grassroots organization that protects and aids North Korean refugees hiding in China. Danny currently resides in the U.S, where he is studying for his GED and spreading awareness about the North Korean crisis by sharing his personal story.
