We're at the east siding switch at Davis Junction, Illinois as a westbound Canadian Pacific "589" train takes the siding and passes a waiting eastbound ethanol train.

What is the significance of the turning off or dimming the ditch lights and headlights? Some type of signal to the opposing crew?

The ethanol train got underway shortly with some nice sound as it went by. That video is here: http://youtu.be/6eosOjs8IAQ?hd=1
