Here's to free water... This is a tour and some how-to around our new four barrel rain water harvesting system at the Sugar Shack, an intentional community in the heart of Mid-City Los Angeles. The system, built from a combination of reclaimed and easy to acquire parts, is a crowning jewel in our ever growing urban permaculture installation that now includes micro food forestry, hanging gardens, rooftop gardens and intensive composting.
You can now get the Construction Guide at Vertecology. With a 21 page set of step-by step color diagrams and construction drawings, an interactive materials list linked to actual suppliers and a complete project budget with some ideas on how to get it done more cheaply, the Construction Guide will help you understand the build process and the principles behind rainwater harvesting. It will give you the confidence to build -- and even improve upon - a rainwater collection system like the one you see here.
