Insight into the traffic and transit patterns of how all people -- whether walking, driving or using public transit -- travel around a city is critical to determining transit and infrastructure needs. Rather than relying on traditional onboard surveys on buses and trains, Istanbul Ulasim, the city's transportation authority, IBM and Vodaphone are using insight from big data to improve Istanbul's transit system and city services -- from where transit routes should be located to optimizing current transit operations to lowering emissions citywide. A first of a kind solution is being piloted in Istanbul that uses IBM Research innovations to glean insight from billions of pieces of anonymized mobile data that show the commuting patterns of its citizens. Then, advanced analytics are used to help understand the demand for transportation infrastructure and compare and contrast it with the supply of public transit infrastructure to highlight gaps. IBM is using this insight to scientifically model the bus routes that connect to Istanbul's new metro rail line. It also shows how citizens can help impact and improve the services a city offers and make it more sustainable in the process.
