Illinois workers’ compensation insurance companies are breaking the law! They only accept claims on paper, so medical offices have to spend thousands on certified mail – and sometimes wait YEARS to be reimbursed for care provided to injured workers. Under current law, they’re supposed to pay late-payment interest, but there’s no penalty if they don’t – so they ignore the law!
If this is allowed to happen in workers’ compensation, where will it stop?
There is a solution – but we need your help.
This year, the Illinois State Medical Society helped pass bipartisan legislation to force work comp insurance companies to pay late-payment interest and use electronic billing. But Governor Rauner rejected it, issuing an amendatory veto with language that could make the current crisis even worse.
Lawmakers have the ability to override that veto in November, but they need to hear your voice!
Call your State Representative and State Senator. Urge them to override the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 904 this November.
Write to your local newspaper. Spread the word that if physicians have to bear the costs of treating work comp patients for years before being reimbursed, many will no longer be able to treat injured workers at all.
Engage your colleagues. Physicians need to stand up and be heard on this issue, and the more of us speak with one voice, the more effective we will be!
