During the Northeast hurricane of 1869, the First Church of Fair Haven (known fondly as the "Captain's Church" due to the many seafaring families who called it home) incurred terrible damage and ultimately had to be torn down. Its steeple was the tallest in the region and served as a beacon for the ships coming into port. Shortly after an anonymous poem was written commemorating the church. We wrote a song.
