After departing from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, we drove down to Silverton on US Highway 550. This historic highway traces its beginnings to 1883 as a toll road, and now it is one of the most scenic roads in America. The climb from the town of Ouray to Red Mountain Pass has been described by road bikers as a category 1 or HC (Hors Categorie), which is extremely difficult. The Red Mountain Pass is about 1,000 feet above the river at the start of our drive, but we quickly narrow the gap between the road and the river by the time the second tunnel is encountered. The town of Silverton was where the train departs from, my parents rode it while my brother and I drove to Durango to meet them. The 3.5 hour ride is scenic, and my father captured many photos along the way.
