These videos are one of the ways that Edmonton’s Mayor Don Iveson connects to community. As a father of 2 young children and a champion for literacy as well as our public library - he understands the value of sharing books. He has countless invitations to read to school groups but can't possibly accept them all. In an effort to “share our Mayor” and connect to children (and adults) through books we have created a project called Mayor Reads. Monthly episodes are based on books which may be related to seasonal themes or city issues that would appeal to our intended audience of elementary students and families. We are so pleased to have the support of the Edmonton Public Library for this project as they are happily “sharing” with the production and promotion of these videos.
Legacy of Heroes was created to tell the community about the remarkable people and events that are part of the Edmonton Police Service’s history. This issue features Alex Decoteau, who was a Metis, athlete, police officer, soldier and a hero in Edmonton’s history. Like many other institutions, EPL is an important part of Edmonton’s history. EPL has come a long way since 1913, when fewer than 20 staff at two branches served a population of 67,000 citizens and books were all you could find on our shelves. These days, you can find a rich collection of content through the library, including Alex Decoteau stories on their website contributed by his family members, along with more than 9 million digital resources and much more. Today, more than 600 staff across 19 locations serve the diverse needs of our growing city, providing essential services, collections and programs that touch the lives of thousands of Edmontonians every day.
