Gran Canaria is one of the seven Canary Islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean off the Northwest off Morocco.
Despite its closeness to the African continent the Canary Islands belong to Spain since the XV century when the Spanish conquistadores claimed control over the islands.
Gran Canaria is one of the most populated islands with close to a million inhabitants. Its capital city is called Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and also acts as the capital province that represents the eastern islands Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
The island of Gran Canaria has many popular sites to visit in all kinds of environments.
If you go to South Gran Canaria you will find the wonderful and unique Maspalomas dunes, and further south the marvellous port city Mogán where you can eat amazing fresh fish.
Up in the Northeast is where the Capital is at with one of the biggest urban beaches in Europe with over 2 kilometers of sand and plenty of restaurants to eat right by the water.
Gran Canaria is also well known for its weather since the average temperature ranges from 20-24 celsius degrees all year round. During the winter as long as it is sunny there is no problem to go to the beach and go swimming.
