Check out the new book on the same topic as this talk: "Why Greatness Cannot Be Planned: The Myth of the Objective" by Kenneth O. Stanley and Joel Lehman
at http://www.amazon.com/Why-Greatness-C...

Prof. Kenneth Stanley delivers a keynote talk at the 16th Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence (EPIA 2014) called "When Algorithms Inform Real Life: Novelty Search and the Myth of the Objective." The central idea in the talk is that setting objectives often actually prevents them from being achieved. This problem is demonstrated through several unique computer experiments and later shown to apply not only to computer algorithms but to many problems in life and society as well.
