This classic film (1963) tracks a young Catholic's progress from seminary to eventual appointment as cardinal. Director Otto Preminger takes you through a mini-history of the Catholic Church's stance on the serious ethical problems facing the world, from the threat of Nazism to the nature of marriage. The Cardinal is a compulsively watchable if crammed history lesson.
