About the subjects of the mosaics:

Dean Kamen is an inventor and the founder of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). FIRST is a nonprofit organization aimed at changing our culture into one that values science, engineering, and math. Dean has also invented the segway, and the Slingshot water purification system now helping many African communities, as well as many medical devices.

Mr. Kenton Swartley is a physics teacher at Cedar Falls High School. He started this robotics team in 1999 with a group of enthusiastic students, and the team is named after him. In 2011, Mr. Swartley was honored with the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award, an award that recognizes outstanding mentors, and in 2012 with the Gold Star Award For Outstanding Teachers.

Jan Newendorp is one of our most beloved mentors. She embodies the ideals of FIRST, reminding us all of our Gracious Professionalism and making sure the students do the work with the guidance of mentors. In 2012 Jan and Bruce recieved the Waterloo Exchange Club Golden Deeds Award. This year Jan was nomintated for the Woodie Flowers award which recognizes exceptional mentors.
