Musical Brotherhoods From The Trans-Saharan Highway

From the Atlantic coastal fort of Essaouira, the Trans-Saharan highway winds forth to the imperial city of Marrakech. Here we find one of the social wonders of the world- a meeting place hundreds of years old where, on a nightly basis, magicians, fortune tellers, herbalists, acrobats, monkey handlers, snake charmers, astrologers, numerologists and sorcerers create intriguing displays of bewitching spectacle.

By night, the square transforms into a mystical symphony of mystical brotherhoods and musicians: The Aissoua, Derkaoua Hamadasha, Jilila and Gnaouo.

In a world where the information technology juggernaut is homogenizing and impoverishing our lives, confining us in the remote-controlled darkness of privacy, the Jemaa el Fna offers a stark contrast- a public forum the fosters human interaction through its music, furthering the ancient oratory traditions and vibrant human communion created by its poets, musicians and storytellers."
