It's not even ironic. It's a serious 1993 ad that, one can only assume, is attempting to be "hip" or similar.
The absorption of Gateway into the Somerfield brand began soon after this ad aired, its name forever tarnished by one of the worst adverts ever made, a bargain-basement successor to The Man Who Said Abbey Life Was Right (qv). The brand never recovered; pretty soon they'll all be Co-Ops. I like the Co-Op (yay for the tiny scraps of socialism which still survive in the West) so that's okay.
