Porch Light is a collaboration between the Mural Arts Program (MAP) and the City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIDS). Through this groundbreaking program, artists are paired with individuals receiving treatment for behavioral health challenges to design, paint and hang large-scale murals. The mural projects engage people in a new way, developing deeper connections to their community and creating a safe space to talk about behavioral health issues, including mental health problems and substance abuse. By facilitating opportunities for personal growth and leadership, creating transformative public art projects, and raising awareness of behavioral health services, The Porch Light Initiative is forging a new path toward enhanced community health and overall quality of life.
