A beautiful historic chess set commemorating the historic Spanish attack on England, which was successfully repelled under Elizabeth I. A huge historic maritime event, deserving of such a fine set. Depicted are Elizabeth I (queen), Lord Howard of Effingham (acting here as king), King Philip II and his wife Anne "of Austria" (king and queen), flanked by the Spanish Duke of Medina Sidonia and Roman Catholic bishop (bishops); with the English Sir Francis Drake and Anglican Archbishop (bishops). The lineup is complete with English and Spanish style knights and castles, and -- most exceptionally -- the ships as pawns.
