Instead of using this method, doing ordinary calculations with logic is more usefull. I just tested doing the first one, (106)^2. It can be rewritten as (100+6)^2=(10000+1200+36) =11236. Then you dont have to remeber this thing he did because you can use your another method.

 Dr. Patrick, thanks alot :) .it seems that you are using a formula that I feel I am familiar with. Please try it ( a*a = ((a+a)-100)*100 + (a-100)(a-100)) ... it is of same concept

At which stage do numbers stop being "close" to 100? Or is it a case that numbers further away would work, but become laborious to do so? Neat number trick - I will show this to my students.
