Was domestic violence ever acceptable? Uh...no. Violence against women has always been abhorred by society, as evidenced by historical laws protecting women (and only women) and recorded incidents of convictions and vigilante justice.

And what about battered men? Society never used to be able to afford to ignore them. Battered men were, in fact, ridiculed and held in contempt by communities, subjected to ritualized public humiliations rather than helped. Why? And why does society now ignore their existence, when even 200 years ago communities, in their own way, at least acknowledged the problem.

Nether domestic violence by men against women, or by women against men, was acceptable to society, though their response to one was VERY different from their response to the other. So what happened that changed our outlook? Why are we more protective of women than ever, and why is it possible for society to now pretend battered men don't exist?
