Step back in time with me to the year 1898 as we listen to a historic early Edison brown wax cylinder from my collection recorded that year. One of my favorite brown wax cylinders, this has the delightful and elaborate announcement "Governor Roosevelt's Rough Riders March Played By The 71st Regiment Band Of New York City At Edison's Laboratory". I selected one of my Columbia "High Trunion" Model AT Graphophones to play this early cylinder. Isn't it wonderful to let our minds lapse back to a time when horses were the primary mode of transportation and their wonderful clip-clop-clip-clop sounds on the cobblestone streets were commonplace. I hope that you enjoy this early cylinder as much as I always have. May it take you back in time even for just a couple of minutes to that delightfully low tech era that is so refreshing with our stressful times of today. The slight wavering of sound that you hear is not from the phonograph but is from the cylinder. Some of my earliest brown wax cylinders, including this one, exhibit this on playback. To me the sound is just wonderful as is since it immediately tells us "I'm very old. Please appreciate me for what I am". Thanks so much for stopping in and please stop in anytime!
