The rise of the iPod (and iPhone) essentially killed the boombox and stereo system. Gone was the need for a CD player/cassette combo. Instead, an adapter was required to somehow get the music off of your iPod and onto your home theater. Thankfully, some industrious people decided to take the iPod experience and build a speaker system around it: hence, the iPod Dock.
