DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE, The "5" Royales, King #5098 1957
Flipside: DON'T BE ASHAMED - Enjoy a piece of History as you listen to this first recording of a Classic song! The "5" Royales began as the Royal Sons in 1942, a locally popular gospel quintet based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. They became one of the influential "pioneers" of early R & B for artists and groups to come.

The original members included brothers Lowman, Curtis and Clarence Pauling, along with William Samuels and Otto Jefferies. They recorded a lot of great songs on a number of different record labels: Apollo 1951-1955, ABC, Home of the Blues, Todd and Vee-Jay but most of their releases were for King Records.

They were the first artist to record DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE which was co-written by group member Lowman Pauling. He wrote most of their material, sang bass and was one of the most innovative guitarists who first intentionally used guitar feedback on a record. Eric Clapton named Pauling as "an influence."

DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE by The "5" Royales (Eugene Tanner singing lead) did not chart nationally on Billboard when King first released it in 1957. It did, however, chart when King re-released it in late fall of 1960 with an over dubbed FEMALE CHORUS and flipside: MIRACLE OF LOVE on King # 5453. It charted in February 1961 for 4 weeks and reached #81. It was released a 3rd time in 1963 on King # 5756 with the flipside: TEARS OF JOY.

DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE was a monster hit for The Shirelles. Their version on Scepter #1203-1959- charted in August 1959 and reached #83 nationally on Billboard. It was re-released in late fall 1960 and charted again in March of 1961 for 20 weeks and reached #3. It was also a monster hit for The Mamas and The Papas' whose version on Dunhill #4077 charted in March 1967 for 10 weeks and stayed #2 for 3 weeks. Another charted version of DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE was by The Temprees on We Prod. #1808 which charted in October 1972 for 2 weeks and reached #93.
