Professor Galster’s talk is entitled “Driving Detroit: The Quest for Respect in the Motor City.” A fifth generation Detroiter, Prof. Galster will discuss how – within a half century -- Detroit went from being an industrial powerhouse to a city that lost nearly half of its population and became a poster child for urban decay, crime, and racial division. He will explain the “how geography, local government structure, and social forces created a housing development system that produced sprawl at the fringe and abandonment at the core”. He will also highlight factors that are leading to the city’s reinvention.
