The front squat is a great CrossFit exercise to develop lower body and core strength, as well as midline stability. Once the athlete has mastered the air squat, she can move on to a squat with weight. In the front squat, the athlete holds the bar in "the rack" position, which is at the shoulders with the elbows high. This takes a lot of flexibility and is essential to this exercise. Maintaining those high elbows will ensure the athlete's chest remains up and decreases the likelihood of the athlete "dumping" the weight forward during a CrossFit WOD or strength training session. Like many weightlifting exercises, the front squat requires a significant amount of core strength and stability. A solid front squat is necessary to move on to more advanced exercises, such as the squat clean. Athletes will want to add the front squat into their training sessions to increase their chances of success at the 2012 CrossFit Games.
