AVONDALE, Ohio (Liz Bonis) -- There is a new report that says a few foods added to your daily diet might lower the odds of getting diabetes. Liz Bonis shares the list in Tuesday's health alert. You likely know a few healthy habits can help you lower the odds of diabetes. Keeping your weight down, getting regular exercise, but this study also found magnesium might make a difference. Local 12 stopped out at the Center for Respite Care to tell you more about this research. It is published in the Journal Diabetes Care and it found the nutrient magnesium might make a difference. Foods like these are high in magnesium: nuts, seeds greens,and avocados. These are some of the best sources. This study found those who got more of this nutrient over a lifetime had a 32 percent lower risk for metabolic impairment which is a risk factor for diabetes. They studied 2,500 people to find this out. Now you still know it helps to pick the right parents, in other words genetics also plays a role in this disease as well. But if you know that diabetes runs in your family, you may want to also add these foods to your diet, and talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your risk.
