Join Doug Green at http://www.youtube.com/user/headgarde... for his garden journal videos and thousands of articles/reader questions. This short video shows you how to deal with a root bound plant.. When the roots are circling the pot and you can't see soil for roots - the root mass is hard and compacted, then the pot is root bound. The solution to that is to cut and chew away at the roots to make them regrow in another direction. In this case, with all the cutting Doug has done, the roots will regrow quickly and out away from the center of the pot. This will establish the plant much faster than if the roots were left as-is and planted as a root bound mass. When you plant this root-bound way, the roots keep circling and resist moving away from the plant.
