This piece is not a part of the Vienna 1938 Collection, rather it's a charcoal drawing I made as a teen in the Shanghai Jewish ghetto. Back then, I spent a lot of time sitting by the window sketching the activities on the street below. Papa's customers were always very impressed with my drawings, but it didn't make any sense to me that other people couldn't draw. Little did I know that these early drawings would change my life. The head of "The Joint" -- the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which helps and still helps Jewish communities in need -- saw my drawings and offered me a scholarship at the l'École des Beaux Arts in Paris. As they say, the rest is history. - Ilie For more, follow our journey on Facebook: www.facebook.com/deborahstrobinandiliewacs
