(Fun MTV originally posted on TGS' fb page in 2010) The Manila International Airport Authority, which manages the nation's main gateway-the NAIA, enhanced its customer relations thrust through a deliberate service branding for the gateway airport as "the SMILING AIRPORT' thru the "NAIA. We go the extra Smile" campaign in 2007, rallying all airport workers in all airport government agencies and service providers to join hands in exhibiting courteous, efficient and honest service for the good of The Customer.

Then comes the discouraging ranking by an international website in mid 2011 - NAIA: One of the World's Worst Airports? (alongside many otherwise well developed and high-traffic global airports such as those in Paris, Los Angeles, London, New York, Russia, India, Australia, Brazil.) Major networks and some broadsheets harped on a rather unfair tagline for the country's gateway airport: "NAIA as one of the World's Worst or Most Hated Airports"...? So sad how some interest groups have taking advantage of self-incriminating news, ostensibly to advance their hidden agenda and promote the interest of their favorite business groups, perhaps (or the usual Machiavellian ploy of some bright guys to hype future endeavors, as some columnists revealed).

The NEED for HIGHER CAPACITY and MORE MODERN GATEWAYS for progressing nations like ours had been identified as early as during the Ramos administration, in the early 1990's. It has long been acknowledged that there is a perennial 24/7challenge to meet international levels of service in international airport processes, passenger and cargo handling and functionality in infrastructure. Even with the FAILURE of the NATIONAL GOVERNMENT to deliberately pursue this critical aviation infrastructure program over the years, the NAIA COMMUNITY, in spite of its limited terminal and runway capacity, nonetheless tried its best to function as a SAFE, CUSTOMER -ORIENTED and FRIENDLY gateway airport for the past decades. But the "worst airports" controversy seems to be obviously stretched by some quarters to a sensational degree, at the expense, once again, of the poor and dedicated PUBLIC SERVANTS and airline workers at NAIA just trying their best to SERVE, no matter the odds or despite their hardwork and sincere efforts for many years!

For the 28th AAA Meeting in February 2010, aside from guaranteeing a professionally run international convention for airport and civil aviation concerns, MIAA mustered its resources to produce a much needed SHOWCASE of the Filipino's WARM CUSTOMER SERVICE, CREATIVITY, PROFESSIONALISM, and of course, HOSPITALITY, all delivered with the generous FILIPINO SMILE, during the 4-day conference, bonding all airport managers in a rare experience of camaraderie, that EARNED the RESPECT and ADMIRATION of no less than professional and discriminating AIRPORT MANAGERS themselves in iconic global airports such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, among others.

Kudos to all the gateway airport workers constantly trying to raise the standards of service at the NAIA! MUSIC Credits to the APO Hiking Society for "Just a Smile Away", Barry White for "Love's Theme" and Black Eyed Peas for "Tonight's Gonna be a Good Night"
