This is - I think - a 1930's recording of Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika, and the version which the ANC always considered 'official'. I haven't been able to find it elsewhere on youtube, so decided to put it up myself.

I've got little if any connection with South Africa really, beyond spending about 72 hours there - but I utterly adore the song. Politics and idealism aside, sheesh: those harmonies, for me, make it one of the most powerful and moving pieces of music I think I have ever heard.

The fact that it ends in a slightly higher key than it starts is almost a sign too of how, singing it, you kind of go off on one and start floating upwards - sort of. Don't really get that with 'God Save Wotsername', do you.
