Carol-Ann Galego--Finding the Right Words: Dispelling the Mystery in Medicine

In a fast and furious slideshow presentation, Carol-Ann delves into the contention surrounding the biochemical impossibility of homeopathy. Her first move is to find appropriate terms for considering the remedial action in question. Rather than accept its hegemonic status, she questions the commensurability of biochemistry to its object of study: life (and, by extension, medicine). She introduces biosemiotics as a more suitable context for studying medicine, then briefly outlines the therapeutic value of penetrating life with language. Finally, she returns to the question at hand and considers how homeopathy factors into this endeavour.

Carol-Ann's interest in effective ethical healthcare was initially piqued by personal need and later informed by academic study. Her training in philosophy allowed her to adopt a critical orientation to the health sciences, but her personal experiences reminded her that it is not enough to simply undermine the status quo; one must also find and further a viable alternative. Accordingly, she decided to complement her university pursuits with a more committed role: she decided to become a practitioner. Carol-Ann is a Professional Bowenwork practitioner and fourth year student of medical Heilkunst. She graduated with a Masters in Humanities (M. Phil) in 2009 and considers returning to University to deepen her study and practice of medicine.
