Rio 2016 has entertained billions of viewers around the globe over the last two weeks, though it is unlikely that events in the Olympic host city have been followed quite so closely and with such excitement as in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya.
The camp, which is home to 200,000 people, provided half of the Refugee Olympic Team’s ten members, with Rose Nathike, James Nyang and Yiech Pur Biel competing in the 800m events, and Anjelina Nadai and Paulo Amotun both going in the 1500m.
Thanks to the IOC, non-profit humanitarian organization FilmAid, the Olympic Broadcasting Service, UNHCR and Amnesty International, a satellite dish and big screen were erected at the camp before the Games got under way, allowing Kakuma’s inhabitants to follow the exploits of their intrepid camp-mates in Rio.
As you can see for yourself in our video, they were rightly proud of their athletes’ efforts on the biggest stage of them all.
