A brutal Collingwood defence demolishes a Sydney attack minus key forwards Tony Morwood and Glenn Coleman. The Swans kicked a goal within a minute of the start but so poor was their forward line - with regular defender Neil Cordy at full forward - that they did not kick another goal until the last minute. Some of their mistakes, such as ex-Magpie Craig Davis tapping down with no rover, are amazingly inept. Their score is the lowest by any Swan side since 1964. Graeme Wright provides an effective target for Collingwood and wins a Brownlow vote.

Collingwood 9-14 (68) [Goals: Graeme Wright 3, McGuane 2, Taylor 2, Starcevich, Kerrison] defeated Sydney 2-11 (23) [Goals: Henwood, Potter]
