EPRI is continuing to develop and test an Autonomous Transmission Line Inspection Robot, named TI, as part of our years-long RD&D project. This video provides an update on the development and testing of TI, who is currently conducting live tests on an AEP transmission line. A permanent deployment on 53 miles of 138 kV AEP transmission lines is planned for 2015 when TI's successor is ready.
TI allows utilities to autonomously conduct inspections of power lines, making it the first robot of its kind. The technology is fully integrated to enable the fusion of data from visual cameras, LIDAR infrared cameras, RFI detector, motion, and weather sensor systems. Engineers can then access their collected data through a GIS system.
