If you ask me, this is one of the most haunting songs/performances you'll ever hear.
You can find it on the excellent compilation of heartfelt testimonials, American Primitive Vol. II: Pre-War Revenants (1897-1939). Back in the turn-of-the-century (the other century) America, there were often small gatherings at local community halls or any public place, where people of all sexes and sizes and races would get up on stage and sing or play like the world's going to end. Then they'd put their beaten-up guitar away, or stand up off the piano, or make a humble nod of the head, and go back into the audience. Luckily for us, some of these performances were recorded.
