The Gateway Tourism Council, under the auspices of the New Jersey's Department of Tourism and songwriter Steven Baker produced this video and song to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Based on the friendly ongoing tongue-and-cheek dispute between the states of New York and New Jersey, there's always been question as to which state the Statue actually resides in. Since the Statue was constructed on Liberty Island, a small uninhabited body of land that lies in the New York Harbor, the island and its docks are managed by the City of New York. However, the water that surrounds Liberty Island is under the jurisdiction of Jersey City, New Jersey. To complicate matters, Liberty Island has been owned by the federal government since the 1800s, first as a military installation and now as a national landmark. In 1966, the island was listed on the National Register of Historic Places where the United States now holds ultimate control.
Nonetheless, the citizenry of New Jersey decided in 1986 to literally give voice to their claim of the statue by enlisting and commissioning Steve Baker to write a commemorative song, giving birth to the melodic anthem titled, "New Jersey's First Lady."
And while the song and video were first produced in 1986, we thought it only fitting that this tribute once again be resurrected to celebrate the Lady's 125th year in 2011.
Five O' clock on a Jersey City Dock, look across the bay, Miss Liberty is here Such a pretty sight when the morning's crystal clear And I think how nice it is that she's so near New Jersey's First Lady is standing on her island In the harbor of the gateway to America today Her shining torch of freedom raised high above the bay New Jersey's First Lady Lights The Way !
