Jimmy Moore from "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show" podcast - http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/sh... - interviewed gut bacteria researcher Jeroen Raes - http://www.vib.be/en/research/scienti... - from the Flemish Institute for Biotechology in Brussels, Belgium regarding his new research study published in the scientific journal Nature on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 entitled "Enterotypes of the human gut microbiome" - http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/... .

It turns out there are three types of gut microbiota: Bacteroides, Prevotella and Ruminococcus. The ongoing research will examine what role these bacteria in the gut play in the metabolism of specific macronutrients such as carbohydrate and protein and whether diet can be manipulated to make one type more dominant than another. It's a fascinating, cutting-edge field of metabolic science right now!
