Homemade Can crusher built with exhaust tubing, a flywheel, and OSB for a chute.

The only weakness to this system is the chute and its size. I can't do Coors Light or Red Bull cans as they are too long. But all of the soda pop cans and most standard sized beer cans go through just fine.

I'd say I get the jam I mentioned one in 30 cans. If I keep a good rhythm, not too fast, not too slow, it's less likely to jam. Also it's usually one of the last cans that might jam. If there are cans on top in the chute, it doesn't seem to jam.

While crushing, I usually use my left arm, and with the right, I'm throwing another can in the chute. I'll usually get about 20 cans in before it'll empty. I can crush them faster than I can load. But if someone helps, I can go through a bag in no time. And with the cans dropping into the garbage can, no bending over picking up the crushed cans.

BTW, my father did the welding and fab on the crusher. It was his idea, not mine. But after he and mom had stomach problems, they didn't drink pop any longer. So I inherited it. He had only a 3 can chute. I re-designed the chute to take 12 cans.

WARNING! Not OSHA approved! If you stuck your fingers in the crushing area, it would probably slice them right off.

I think if I were to make one over again, I'd go with the Mega Can Crusher style using two wheels. This crusher will take any length of can and crush it width-wise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njmvg_...

I would probably mount the wheels in a diagnol fashion to make it easier to load. Similar to this setup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B1iBx...
