Moving Portraits: NYC

Moving Portraits is a collaborative and ongoing series of photographs and cinegraphs by the Friend Brothers - photographer Joe Friend and filmmaker Nick Friend.

The original idea was for us to rendezvous in the fashion capital of the United States, New York City, and spend four days on the streets capturing street-side, fashion portraits. Joe would hand pick fashionable subjects to pose for photographs and participate in the project while Nick filmed the entire process. But when the we hit the streets of NYC on our first day, the project quickly defined itself in a much more clear, organic, intimate, and human way.

Once we stopped someone on the street, we told them about the project. If they were into it, they posed for two separate shoots: one set of photographs for Joe and what we eventually called a “cinegraph” for Nick, filmed in slow motion. Amid the heavy and nonstop vibration of the city, the models were frozen in time and an intimate and genuine view of their personal style was captured. Fueled by positivity and a passion to connect with people, we continued curating a collection of these “Moving Portraits.”

After just a five day visit to NYC, we had both produced some of the best work we’d ever made and had been given an incredible opportunity to collaborate not only with the people of New York, but with each other.

After the trip we began to realize the potential of the project. Fashion is influenced by local cultures and communities. It makes someone stand out while at the same time blend in. It makes statements, both outrageous and subtle. It creates a sense of belonging to a community while clearly expressing one’s individuality.

The goal of the Moving Portraits project is to visit cities, both nationally and internationally, and capture the unique identities of the people living, dressing and existing in these communities.

Very sincere thank you to the people of New York City and everyone that participated in this project. It could not have happened without your contribution.

If you think that Moving Portraits should visit your city, please don’t hesitate to drop us a line!
