Alkan’s ‘paraphrase’ "Salut, cendre du pauvre!" (1856) refers to a section of the 1800 poem ‘La Mélancolie’ by Gabriel-Marie Legouvé, a depiction of a country churchyard not dissimilar in spirit to Thomas Gray’s ‘Elegy’. The piece is a noble funeral march meditation with an elegiac conclusion. Mark Viner's convincing and thoughtful performance of this meditation was given at the 2016 Indian Summer in Levoca Festival. Mark's recital at the Festival were supported by the Alkan Society (http://www.alkansociety.org)
