Berlin's Swarm Intelligence is back on Acre Recordings after a break, and boy is he back! 'Forced to Unknown' is a brutal return, ratcheting up the tension and anger after 2012's releases, Surveillance (Acroplane) & Shards (Stasis Records). Largely discarding his earlier electro/breaks feel, Swarm Intelligence sculpts five tracks of mid-tempo breakcore style sounds, employing the saturated sheen and frantic beats for which that genre is justly famous, yet providing us with something much more musical, danceable and mixable. The first four slices take us from the dark and frenetic Fousoc, through the more stripped back off-kilter lurching of Tarred, the deliciously distorted Drum & Bass vibe of Skism, to the ravey jump-up of Syphon. The E.P. closes with a distinctly catchy ragga-jungle remix of DC Napoleon by Lady Grew. Hoovers and amens abound! By turns hard, dark yet catchy and dance floor-friendly, this is a killer release and an evolution in Swarm Intelligence's unmistakable sound.
