In September 1916, after killing an inexperienced trainer named Red Eldridge, circus elephant "Big" Mary was hanged during a public execution in the town of Erwin, TN. The spectacle has been viewed by many as an act of animal cruelty, and by some as a stigma that still hangs over the community of Erwin, TN. Through interviews with Erwin residents, folklorists, and a best-selling author, HANGING OVER ERWIN revisits the events surrounding the lynching, it's effects on the community, and whether it is possible for this small Appalachian town to remove the black mark from its history.
