WHEN BEARCAT WENT DRY (1919) starring Lon Chaney (as Saloon Keeper), Bernard Durning (as Bearcat), Vangie Valentine (as Blossom) and Walt Whitman (as her father). Directed by Oliver L. Sellers and filmed in Kentucky. "BEERKAT" with intertitles in Dutch and ROLLING STONES SYMPHONY added by Bernard Durning (me). My great uncle, Bernard Durning, was a silent film star and director, for whom A STAR IS BORN (1937) was based by his protegee, William Wellman. "I was a Champion of the Bernie Durning System," wrote Wellman. Bernard Durning and his wife, Shirley Mason, of Fox Film Studios, were called "HOLLYWOOD'S MOST-DEVOTED COUPLE." Buster Keaton lived with them and her sister, Viola Dana. Lon Chaney also tries to kill Bernard Durning in THE GIFT SUPREME (1920), so they were good friends. But in TREASURE ISLAND also in (1920), Shirley Mason as the Jim evens the score with Lon Chaney as Long John Silver! Kevin Brownlow calls BEERKAT a forgettable film but it's actually THE GONE WITH THE WIND of the silent era and would do well by film restoration by George Eastman House and AFI by Martin Scorcese. BEERKAT is from the 1918 novel by Charles Neville Buck, author of THE CALL OF THE CUMBERLANDS. Vangie Valentine joined THE ZEIGFELD FOLLIES. Bernard Durning directed GALLAGHER AND SHEAN in AROUND THE TOWN (1923) a ZEIGFELD FOLLIES film. Al Shean was the uncle of THE MARX BROTHERS.
