Journey Downunder composed by Javiera Scarratt. Premiere performance by Camerata Orchestra led by Belinda Jezek at the Sydney Youth Orchestra SYO concert on December 4, 2010.
Highly talented Javiera Scarratt, aged 11, is both a viola player in Camerata Orchestra and the in-house composer who created this musical masterpiece.
In a pre-performance speech, Javiera introduced her composition as;
"Determination. Adrenalin. Fear.
These describe the daring escapade of an English convict family from the First Fleet.
First, the escape from the ship. With people everywhere, they steal into the cabin boy's room and "borrow" some appropriate disguises. They find the rowboat and cast off.
Next, on the sea. All is calm. The fleet is out of sight. For a moment there is peace.
Finally, they reach land. They row the boat ashore, exhausted. They collapse on the beach. But there is more determination, adrenalin and fear to face as they find themselves in an unknown place, and as the begin the perilous journey to find new life.
In the piece of music, determination (violas) and adrenalin (celli) mingle with fear (violins) to create the atmosphere for this exciting story."
