Born in mainland China, Ha Jin came to the United States 1985 to pursue a PhD in English at Brandeis University. He earned the PhD and went on to become a poet, writer, and professor. Jin has written several critically acclaimed works, including his National Book Award and PEN/Faulkner Award-winning novel Waiting, and The Bridegroom, a collection of short stories. War Trash (2004), Ha Jin's most recent novel at the time this interview was recorded, won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. War Trash deals with themes of home and identity through the story of a Chinese Communist soldier held as a POW by the Americans during the Korean War.
