What does it take to get a personal letter from the Pope? Just ask these guys ...
In a show of solidarity with Pope Francis and in living out a mission of "a faith that does justice," Los Angeles-based Jesuit Restorative Justice Initiative (JRJI) held a ritualistic foot-washing at Sylmar Juvenile Hall this past Holy Thursday. That news, along with personal letters from the young inmates, evoked a personal response from His Holiness. JRJI employees Jonni and James proudly tell the tale.
JRJI advocates for judicial reform and works to bring healing to those incarcerated and their families. With a similar desire to bring healing, Pope Francis broke with tradition this past March and held the Papal Holy Thursday foot-washing ritual with some of Italy's incarcerated youth, rather than in a cathedral with clergy.
