5-23-2010: A Great Blue Heron hunts on the natural grass of the Beach Chalet Athletic Field in Golden Gate Park. Keep watching -- bad luck for a ground dweller, the heron gets his/her breakfast. (Or maybe it will be for the chicks over at Stow Lake?) This happens after about 2 minutes. The Common Ravens are hanging around, hoping for some left-overs. There is also a Brewer's Blackbird and the fly-by of a Tree Swallow. You can hear the calls of the Common Raven and the Spotted Towhee. Rec and Park has plans to turn this area in a large sports complex, with articifial turf and 60 foot lights. Let's keep this field natural grass, not artificial turf! There are win-win solutions! See www.sfoceanedge.org. The Draft EIR for the soccer project will be published in October, 2011. Contact SF Ocean Edge for more information and to write letters regarding this important document.
