When this video was taken, in 2009, there was already a much larger more modern flat sorting machine in use by the United States Postal Service. Nevertheless, these FSM 1000s were a solid workhorse for many smaller Post Offices around the country. Also in 2009 an even newer, larger (and much more expensive) Flat Sorer Sequencer came out that went into regular use in early 2010. Again, the newer equipment was bit too large and expensive for smaller Post Offices.
Oh, at the very end of the video you'll notice the machine stops and all the lights come on - that's because a safety light-barrier was interrupted during the recording.
