Stress, toxins, and medications are just a few factors that can cause leaky gut. In today's society, these factors are often unavoidable in our lives, and leaky gut is becoming more problematic.

Establishing what foods irritate the gut is important to personalizing a diet. Keep a food journal that notes daily meals and any symptoms, such as bloating and fatigue. Remove common problem ingredients one at a time for two weeks, and then reintroduce them back into your diet and note any changes. Dairy, gluten, soy, and sugar are four top culprits that irritate the lining and should be initially removed individually.

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and NSAIDs (ibuprophen, Advil, etc) when first determining irritants. Overtime, alcohol and caffeine may be consumed in small quantities, and NSAIDs taken sparingly, depending on the individual. Ensure that there is no candida overgrowth, parasites, or other microorganisms in the body, as any of these conditions will prevent the gut from healing itself. Any flavorings, artificial and natural, come from unknown sources that may irritate the gut. They, along with processed foods and artificial sweeteners, should be completely avoided.

Any leaky gut diet will benefit from homemade, whole foods. Not only are whole foods rich in vitamins and minerals, but they contain natural enzymes to help the body break down nutrients. Include high-fiber and essential fatty acids (EFAs). Nuts cover both fiber and EFAs. Unprocessed oils, such as olive, coconut, and flax have EFAs, while legumes, berries, and vegetables such as sweet potatoes (yams) are rich in fiber. However, everyone is different: those with autoimmune diseases may want to avoid nuts and seeds, while grains and legumes may worsen symptoms for some.

Many leaky gut patients are deficient in vitamins and minerals, and the following supplements can reestablish a healthy body:

• Whole-food multivitamins will help fill in nutritional gaps. Avoid as many USP–synthetic–derived vitamins as possible.

• Glutamine, an amino acid which supports healthy immune and digestive function, will feed cells that makeup the small intestinal lining.

• Probiotics will colonize healthy bacteria in the gut and ensure proper function as the leaks are repaired. Individuals may notice that if they take probiotics, particularly acidophilus, they may become bloated, develop rashes, or feel sick. Not only are these symptoms of leaky gut, but the person may wish to wait on adding probiotics into their daily regimen until they have found food irritants and have been dieting well for at least a couple of weeks.

Stress should be kept under control to help the body digest food and heal. Even one minute of meditation can calm your mind and relax your body. After irritant foods are found and a good diet is maintained, most people notice leaky gut improvement after six weeks, however several months may be needed for some.
