The great Italian tenor Beniamino Gigli (1890-1957) in Romeo's declaration of love to Juliette "L'amour! L'amour!...Ah! lève-toi soleil!" from Act 2 of Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, coming from a live performance on 5 April 1934 at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, conducted by Gabriele Santini.

The photo in the main part of the video features Gigli as a rather chubby Romeo in this La Scala production.

Gigli sang the role frequently during his stint at the New York Metropolitan Opera, but at La Scala he only sang it in one season between 21 March and 5 April 1934. The last performance of the run is documented here.
